Dr. Morrison, who is University Provost and Chief Academic Officer of Boston University, provides leadership for the University’s overall academic, budgetary, and planning processes, and oversight of its academic programs, research, global programs, enrollment, and student affairs.

In reflecting on Dr. Morrison’s presentation, Headmaster Bill Taylor stated, “Her focus on the changing nature of work and how educational institutions must be able to adapt to ensure that they are preparing their graduates for a work world that will be less centralized, more flexible, and more innovative is very relevant to the skills we are teaching at Trinity-Pawling.” Taylor continued, “Dr. Morrison’s emphasis on the dynamic between the changing demographics of college-age students and the affordability gap for higher education was insightful. This is a dynamic that independent schools began to see shortly after the 2008 recession in the elementary grades. It is now working its way through the entire span of the educational system: fewer students and a higher difficulty to pay the full cost of tuition.” Taylor took particular interest in Dr. Morrison’s emphasis on the historical importance of immigration with regard to our overall national citizenry as well as to the depth and value of our human capital as a nation. “Certainly, we have found the international aspect of our student community to be critically valuable to the fabric of the student population and the depths of gifts and talents from the entire student body,” Taylor concluded.

“Educational institutions can only be responsive if the people within them are responsive,” says Taylor. “If educators don’t care or are not aware of the need to be responsive to students and situations, then schools become self-focused and self-serving.”
Trinity-Pawling embraces the creative and valuable tension that exists between being traditional AND being innovative. With a rich history, grounded in traditions, Trinity-Pawling is on a solid foundation—able to be responsive, and to innovate in areas that are critical, such as preparing our students to be more adaptable in a rapidly changing world.

Trinity-Pawling is also being responsive in its approach to strategic planning. Since 1990, the School has created three outstanding Long Range Plans. They were plans that offered strategic vision and goals for the next ten years. “The pace of change has accelerated so fast that it is difficult to anticipate the next three years, much less the next ten years,” says Taylor. “I was on the Long Range Planning Committee in 2000, for example. While we focused on technology, we could not foresee the explosion of wireless technology and the SmartPhones that emerged in the second half of that decade.”

This academic year, Trinity-Pawling will embark on the process of developing a new strategic vision. Committees at the Board and Faculty/Administration levels will be coordinated and those educators will be charged with strategic visioning, primarily focusing on the next three years, and on long-term goals as well.

BILL TAYLOR REFLECTS ON THE LEADERSHIP SUMMIT

            TOMAS RODRIGUEZ ’15

The 2018 FIL Men’s Lacrosse World Championship took place this summer in Netanya, Israel from July 11-July 21. Among those competing nations were Australia and Puerto Rico—and wearing those nations’ jerseys were two of Trinity-Pawling’s very own. A defenseman in his junior year at Pace University at the time, Rodriguez also had 2 years of Division 1 lacrosse at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) under his belt. He was one of 23 players selected for the Puerto Rican national team.

“Playing for Puerto Rico was completely different from playing for a school or a town,” Rodriguez explained. “23 of us were representing thousands of people. We weren’t just playing for ourselves—we were playing for all those who played before us and anyone who will play after us. We received support from the entire island and it was incredible. The smile on Ryan’s face was a dead giveaway.”

Though the two players had never before crossed paths, Rodriguez felt an instant connection. “That’s what T-P does for you. It builds this incredible brotherhood and support system. There’s nothing like it,” he shared.

Both Rodriguez and Spark finished in the Top 10 at the World Championship. Australia finished fourth overall. Puerto Rico finished eighth, with wins against Japan and Germany, and made history as the first-ever first year program in the tournament to make it to the Top 10. And to top it all off, both Spark and Rodriguez were able to meet on the world stage and realize just how far the Trinity-Pawling brotherhood goes. “The entire tournament was a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” concluded Rodriguez. “I consider myself so lucky.”

46 NATIONS, 10 DAYS, 2 TRINITY-PAWLING ALUMNI ON THE FIELDS

            MATT SHULTZ ’20

Matt Shultz ’20 started racing cars at 8-years-old in the Slingshot Division—which included adults—driving up to 60 mph. Last year, he picked up Rose Contracting from Westchester as a sponsor, due to his academic and athletic excellence here at Trinity-Pawling. The variety of places where I spend my time and work allows me to continually challenge myself and grow.” Nick states, when asked about how he juggles it all.

Certainly Nick is a huge asset to those he assists at Grand Central Tech. His background in supply chain management and strategy give him a critical tool kit from which growing companies can learn as they expand their business and look to source materials on a bigger scale. To create and open his own startup, Fado, Nick has also relied on his multi-dimensional skill set.

“At this point in my career, I have saved over a billion dollars for the various companies I’ve worked at, an accomplishment I’m very proud of. It’s exciting to share my knowledge with young businesses, and now also apply everything I’ve learned to open something of my own. I was fortunate to sync up with a business partner (for Fado) who has skills that I don’t, and together we feel we can really disrupt the retail industry. At the very least, it’s been an incredible learning experience to put some of my own advice to startups into action myself!” Nick comments.

When asked how his time at Trinity-Pawling has helped him over the years, Nick relates, “The environment that T-P fosters is incredible; it’s an immersive education that really does define an individual at such an influential point in his life. Something as simple as the School’s approach to effort is a concept that I utilize today when managing global teams and projects. I set high expectations for my team to work hard—they may not always get it right at first, but if they try and can show they tried, the rest will come. It’s ok to be wrong—many of the challenges and failures in my career have been the biggest assets in my eventual success!”

Hard work + sustained effort—certainly a recipe for success both here at Trinity-Pawling and beyond.
